Tantie and Uncle Teddy

This photograph was taken around 1920, about seven years after Uncle Teddy (right rear) came back home from Boston, where he had attended the School of the Museum of Fine Arts from 1905 until 1913.

After living outside of the South for nearly a decade, he left art school and returned to Charleston to help his father, "Captain" E.G. Harleston.

Captain had become the richest black man in the city as owner of the Harleston Funeral Home, and he had plans to expand. One of his son's, Robert (left rear), would operate the Summerville business. His other son, John Moultrie (center rear), was unreliable, and so he turned to Teddy, the artist.

Captain lured Teddy home with the promise of an apartment with a skylight above the three-story white clapboard funeral home, located at 121 Calhoun Street. Uncle Teddy was not happy about his circumstances, but he had a strong sense of family duty and so he acquiesced to his strong-willed and domineering father.

Uncle Teddy's sisters, Eloise Harleston Jenkins (left front) and Katherine Harleston Fleming, are also shown here. Their mother, Louisa Moultrie Harleston, had died when Teddy was fifteen years old.
